Waleed Al-Farraj renews criticism of Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal disciplinary case

Saudi football commentator Waleed Al-Farraj has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo again, this time after the Al Nassr captain became the subject of disciplinary proceedings by the Portuguese Football Federation.

The federation’s Disciplinary Council announced on Saturday that it had opened a case against Ronaldo after he left Portugal’s training camp during the most recent international break, 24 hours before the match against Denmark.

Ronaldo has also been handed a temporary, non-automatic suspension while the investigation continues. The case has been classified as “urgent”, with the measure representing the first official punishment before a final decision is made.

Al-Farraj responded to the announcement in a post on his official X account on 10 October 2026, writing: “An important lesson: no one is above the rules.”

The Saudi commentator has previously criticised Ronaldo over a number of incidents, particularly his absence from some matches during the middle of last season’s Roshn Saudi League campaign.

At that time, Al-Farraj launched a strong attack on the Portugal forward and said no player, regardless of their name or status, was bigger than the Saudi league project.

His comments came after Ronaldo objected to Al Hilal’s signings during the winter transfer window.

Despite Ronaldo’s current suspension, Pedro Proenca, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, has said he wants the forward to return to the national team during the next international break in November.
