Ilkay Gundogan’s difficult start at Galatasaray has intensified speculation about his future, with the former Germany captain having played only 11 minutes this season.
The 34-year-old has made two appearances since joining the Turkish club, but manager Okan Buruk has preferred Lucas Torreira and Gabriel Sara in midfield.
Gundogan was an unused substitute as Galatasaray beat Kasımpasa 3-1. Asked after the match whether he was ready to face former club Barcelona in the Champions League, he replied: “I don’t play, so why would I be ready?”
His limited involvement is a notable setback after the expectations surrounding his arrival in Istanbul. Gundogan joined Galatasaray as a free agent in the summer of 2025, following a return to Manchester City after spending the 2023-2024 season with Barcelona.
The German could have an opportunity to make a greater impact in Galatasaray’s next match against Genclerbirligi. Bild reports that Torreira’s sending-off may open the way for Gundogan to return to the team and demonstrate his ability.
The prospect of facing Barcelona adds further significance to the situation. Gundogan represented the Spanish club during the 2023-2024 campaign, before moving back to Manchester City and subsequently completing his transfer to Galatasaray.
Nurnberg return remains possible
While Gundogan attempts to establish himself in Turkey, supporters of Nurnberg continue to hope he could one day return to the club where his career began.
Gundogan started his career with Nurnberg in 2009, and the possibility of a comeback has remained a regular subject of discussion among the club’s fans.
He also acknowledged that a return could happen during an interview with Sky, leaving open the possibility of taking on several different roles.
“Of course I can imagine returning, in any role; whether for another year or two as a player, or perhaps in an administrative position or as a coach. I don’t know, anything is possible,” he said.
For now, Gundogan’s immediate challenge is to secure a more consistent role at Galatasaray. The club’s current midfield choices have restricted him to just 11 minutes of action, while Torreira’s suspension could provide a temporary opening.
His situation remains particularly important with the Barcelona fixture approaching. If his lack of playing time continues, the idea of returning to Nurnberg the club that launched his professional career could become an increasingly realistic option.
