The bronze statue depicting Zinedine Zidane’s famous headbutt against Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final, created by artist Adel Abdessemed, was placed on the Doha Corniche in Qatar. However, it has now been reported that the statue was removed after a campaign, with concerns raised about idolatry, a practice prohibited by Islam.
Adel Abdessemed, a French visual artist born in Algeria, created the controversial artwork, which stands over five meters high and weighs several tons. The statue was acquired by the Qatar Museums Authority as part of preparations for the 2022 Football World Cup in Qatar.
The decision to remove the statue comes amid cultural and religious considerations, with concerns about the potential for idolatry, which goes against Islamic principles. The fate of the artwork remains uncertain following its removal from the Doha Corniche.
