CAF to introduce VAR from group stage of Champions League and Confederation Cup

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology from the group stage of this season’s CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

CAF Interim General Secretary Samson Adamu confirmed the development, marking a significant step in the governing body’s efforts to strengthen officiating standards across its premier club competitions.

VAR to be used from group stage

The decision means participating clubs will benefit from video-assisted officiating from the group stage, rather than having to wait for the knockout rounds for the technology to be introduced.

VAR is designed to assist match officials in reviewing key incidents, including goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards and cases of mistaken identity.

Its implementation from the group stage could help improve decision-making and consistency during crucial matches as clubs compete for continental honours.

Boost for African club football

The move represents an important development for CAF’s interclub competitions, which feature some of Africa’s leading clubs competing for the Champions League and Confederation Cup titles.

The introduction of VAR at this stage is expected to provide additional support to referees and strengthen the integrity of matches throughout the competitions.

CAF has continued to explore ways to improve officiating, competition organisation and the overall standard of African club football.

Adamu’s confirmation will therefore be welcomed by clubs and supporters seeking greater consistency in refereeing decisions across the continent.

Further details regarding the operational arrangements for VAR in the group stages are expected from CAF.
