Durban City captain Ncanana targets CAF Confederation Cup trophy

Durban City captain Siphamandla Ncanana says the club are aiming for a place in the latter stages of the CAF Confederation Cup after reaching the competition’s second preliminary round.

The KZN side advanced by beating Burundi’s Rukinzo FC 3-1 on aggregate, securing their progress on the continental stage.

Durban City will next meet Mauritius side Port Louis over two legs, with qualification for the group stages at stake.

For Ncanana, the campaign represents the fulfilment of a long-held ambition to play in continental football. The captain believes Durban City should set their sights on going all the way and winning the competition.

“It’s one thing I wanted and now it’s happening, I hope we can go as far as winning it,” said Ncanana.

The midfielder, however, is wary of drawing firm conclusions from the team’s opening tie. Durban City have so far played only one round, consisting of a home and away match against Rukinzo FC.

“For now, I won’t say I have acquired so much experience because we have played one round [home and away],” he said.

Ncanana expects the challenge to become clearer if Durban City reach the group phase. He believes that stage will provide a better indication of the team’s level and reveal the difficulty of competing against stronger continental opposition.

“When we reach the group stages, that’s where we’re going to see how difficult it will be. So, group stages will make us see where we are.”
