Barcelona target winning records as Hansi Flick’s side host Getafe

Barcelona can match their best-ever start to a La Liga season and move closer to a home-winning record when they face Getafe on Saturday.

Hansi Flick’s side have won each of their first seven league matches. A victory against Getafe would make it eight in a row, equalling the club record for consecutive wins at the beginning of a La Liga campaign.

Barcelona have also established a seven-point advantage over Real Madrid, while their attacking form has set another new benchmark. They have scored 31 goals in their opening seven matches, surpassing the previous club record of 29, set during the 1950-51 season.

Their goals have included a 7-0 victory over Racing Santander, as well as 5-0 wins against Elche, Rayo Vallecano and Valencia. Levante were beaten 4-0, while Sevilla lost 3-0.

The existing Barcelona record of eight successive victories at the start of a La Liga season was set by Gerardo Martino’s side in 2013-14. Despite that impressive opening, Barcelona did not win the title. Atletico Madrid finished above them after a decisive draw at Camp Nou on the final day of the campaign.

Barcelona will also be seeking to extend their current home winning streak. Success against Getafe would give them 23 consecutive victories at Camp Nou, leaving them one win short of Real Madrid’s record of 24 successive home wins.

Real Madrid achieved that run across the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons.

A further incentive for the hosts is Getafe’s record at the ground. The visitors have never won an away match against Barcelona, although Flick’s team will still need to maintain the form that has produced a perfect league record so far.

The next target beyond Barcelona’s club mark is the Spanish record for consecutive victories at the beginning of a league season. That belongs to Real Madrid, who won their first nine matches in 1968-69.
