Raphinha’s Barcelona transformation earns contract extension to 2030

Brazil forward Raphinha has gone from a player whose signing was questioned to one of Barcelona’s most influential figures, with the club agreeing a contract extension that will keep him at Camp Nou until 2030.

The 28-year-old endured a difficult first season after joining Barcelona, with some questioning whether the deal had been a mistake. Despite his efforts, he struggled to find the consistency expected of him, but his determination never wavered.

Raphinha has since developed into one of the club’s most decisive players. He has retained the intensity that has always characterised his game while adding the maturity and composure needed to influence matches regularly. Barcelona and the player both find it difficult to understand why he was not included among the 30 nominees for the Ballon d’Or.

His influence extends beyond his performances. Raphinha is highly regarded in the dressing room, has become one of the team’s leaders and takes a particular interest in younger players. He is demanding of both his team-mates and himself, believing that part of his responsibility is helping Barcelona maintain the highest standards.

A source close to a first-team player told Sport: “There are moments when we want to kill him. He is like a coach playing alongside you, squeezing every last drop of energy from you and always looking for what is best for you. But he is a leader, and he eventually learned that he is always right. What he does is amazing.”

Raphinha has also built a strong relationship with Hansi Flick. The pair regularly discuss football and share the same expectations about intensity and commitment. Flick trusts the Brazilian to communicate his demands to the rest of the squad, an important role in a dressing room containing several young players.

That commitment is equally apparent when Raphinha represents Brazil. Barcelona would prefer him to return from international duty fully fit, particularly after he came back injured on two occasions, but the club understands that he is not a player who saves energy once he steps on to the pitch.

“Getting him to play with less intensity would mean asking him to stop being Raphinha,” the source added.

Raphinha has not completely ruled out facing Getafe this weekend, although Barcelona considers his recovery difficult. After completing an individual training session today, he intends to test himself on the pitch tomorrow. Even if he is able to take part, the plan would be for him to start on the bench while he assesses his physical condition.

The forward knows the season is still long and that returning in the best possible condition is the priority. His desire to play, however, underlines his commitment.

Barcelona had initially planned to formally announce his renewal on Friday, but the event has been delayed because of Pedro Rodriguez’s retirement announcement at the club’s stadium and Flick’s news conference. The ceremony is expected next week, after the team returns from Turkey, between Wednesday and Friday, although the final date has not been confirmed.

The new agreement recognises Raphinha’s dramatic change in status: from a player under scrutiny to a key performer and senior presence within Barcelona’s dressing room.
