Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou believes the club’s strong support in Durban can help his side overcome Mamelodi Sundowns in Saturday’s MTN8 final.
The two South African giants meet at Moses Mabhida Stadium, with the first major trophy of the season at stake.
Pirates are seeking a fifth successive MTN8 title after winning the competition in each of the past four campaigns. However, their bid for further history faces a major test against Mamelodi Sundowns, the reigning CAF Champions League champions.
With two of the country’s leading clubs contesting the final, the match is expected to draw attention from supporters across South Africa and beyond.
Ouaddou said the location of the final could work in Pirates’ favour, with the Soweto club enjoying significant backing in the coastal city.
“About our preparation, the preparation is going well, and I think it’s a good event. We are really excited to play again this kind of game and to defend this title,” Ouaddou told the media.
The Pirates coach said his team had been able to focus on the final during a two-week preparation period, despite being without some players involved with their national teams.
“Of course, we had around two weeks to prepare for this game. We missed some of the international players, like many teams, but at least the rhythm and the focus were on that game,” he added.
“And especially, what a fantastic event we are playing in Durban. We know it’s a city where we have a lot of support.”
Ouaddou wants strong South African football showcase
Ouaddou also underlined the broader importance of the final, saying both clubs must use the occasion to demonstrate the quality of football in South Africa.
“We are playing a game of two champions, a fantastic event for the country, for all the lovers of football,” he said.
“Our aim is just to go into that game with big ambition, willing to do well, to show the best face of Pirates and, of course, to give a very good image of football in South Africa.”
The match will be watched beyond the country, according to Ouaddou, who believes the teams have a responsibility to meet the occasion.
“I think what is important is the MTN8 Cup is watched all over the continent. Let’s say even in the world. So it’s important for the two teams to give a very good image of football,” he said.
Ouaddou added that he had been encouraged by the mood within the Pirates camp before the final.
“But very excited, very excited on my side. I feel a very good energy from our players, from technical staff.”
The final kicks off at 18:00. Tickets for the match have already sold out.
