FC Metz midfielder Nampalys Mendy has suffered a serious injury that is expected to keep him out of action for several months, dealing a major blow to the Ligue 2 side.
The 34-year-old defensive midfielder has suffered a torn quadriceps tendon in his left knee, ruling him out for an extended period as he begins his recovery.
Mendy joined Les Grenats as a free agent last summer following his departure from Watford, signing ahead of the 2026/27 season with the club expecting his experience to play an important role in their campaign.
The Senegalese midfielder had featured in each of Metz’s opening six Ligue 2 matches of the season, quickly establishing himself as an important member of the squad. However, he was an unused substitute when Metz battled to a 2-2 draw against AS Saint-Étienne in September.
His injury is particularly significant given the role the club expected him to play both on and off the pitch. With extensive experience in French football from spells at OGC Nice, AS Monaco and RC Lens, as well as time in England with Leicester City and Watford, Mendy was regarded as an ideal senior figure to help guide Metz’s younger players.
He was also viewed internally as an important mentor for 16-year-old midfielder Believe Munongo, with his experience expected to support the youngster’s development.
Mendy’s absence will now leave Metz without one of the most experienced players in their squad for a considerable period, forcing the club to find alternatives in midfield while he undergoes treatment and rehabilitation.
The injury is also a setback for the former Senegal international, who earned 35 caps for his country and was part of the team that won the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Mendy played a key role in Senegal’s historic triumph, starting all five matches he featured in during the tournament, including the final against Egypt. The match ended 0-0 after extra time before Senegal prevailed 4-2 on penalties to lift the continental trophy.
After building an impressive career across France and England and representing Senegal at the highest level, Mendy now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines as he works towards returning to full fitness.
