Mkhulise says staying at Sundowns was a ‘no-brainer’ despite limited starts

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise says he never hesitated before signing a new contract with the club, despite struggling to establish himself as a regular starter.

The 30-year-old, who was born in KwaZulu-Natal, joined Sundowns’ senior side after progressing through the club’s youth system during Pitso Mosimane’s tenure.

Mkhulise was previously viewed as one of the club’s most promising players and was expected to become an important presence in midfield. Although he has delivered a number of impressive performances, he has found it difficult to secure a consistent place in the starting line-up.

There had been speculation that he could leave, but Mkhulise extended his stay with the Brazilians by signing a new contract in January.

He says his decision was influenced by his happiness at Sundowns and the support he has received throughout his time at the club. Mkhulise also credited the leadership and stability at the club with helping persuade him to remain in Tshwane.

“It’s because I’m happy here, they take good care of me. And I’m in a happy place,” said Mkhulise.

“It’s like I’m home here, so for me to sign a new contract, it was like a no-brainer. So I didn’t even think twice, I’m happy here. And what’s kept me going for so long I think it all starts from the leadership, they inspire us.

“We have the greatest leadership in the country. So they keep us motivated to do well each and every day. To wake up in the morning and come here.

“And to work hard and to do well because we don’t want to disappoint them. So that’s what’s kept me going for so long.”

Mkhulise said his praise was directed at every level of the club, rather than one individual.

When asked which leaders he meant, he replied: “From the president [Dr Patrice Motsepe] to the chairman [Tlhopie Motsepe], the board, the coaches, our captains, everyone in the team.”
