There were no surprises in the U17 World Cup’s round of 16 clash between Nigeria and Iran on Tuesday. The young Asian players faced a formidable challenge, conceding four goals in a single match, despite having only let in two goals during the group stages. However, they managed to score one goal in return.
The Golden Eaglets dominated their opponents from the start, and Samuel Okon broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute. Subsequently, Kelechi Iheanacho capitalized on good teamwork from Awonyi to extend Nigeria’s lead. Just before halftime, Muhammed Musa further solidified Nigeria’s advantage.
In the second half, Musa Yahaya added another goal for Nigeria before Gholizadeh salvaged a goal for Iran. However, it was too late for a comeback. Nigeria continued their impressive run, scoring a total of 18 goals in 4 matches.
Manu Garba’s team will now face Uruguay in the quarter-finals. Uruguay showcased their strength by defeating Slovakia 4-2, leading 3-0 at halftime. The clash between Nigeria and Uruguay is set for November 2 at 4 p.m. GMT.
