Kaizer Chiefs face goalkeeping dilemma as Renaldo Leaner challenges Brandon Petersen

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz could face a difficult selection call when Brandon Petersen returns from injury, with Renaldo Leaner strengthening his case to retain the starting goalkeeper role.

Petersen, the Amakhosi captain, had been Da Cruz’s preferred choice before his injury last month created an opening for Leaner. The former Sekhukhune United goalkeeper took advantage of the opportunity, producing an assured debut in the goalless Betway Premiership draw against Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Leaner, who joined Chiefs in July after leaving Sekhukhune United, was brought into the starting XI at short notice following Petersen’s injury. Despite the circumstances surrounding his introduction, the 23-year-old looked comfortable throughout his first appearance for the club.

He made two important close-range saves to keep Chiefs in the contest and also displayed confidence when dealing with crosses and situations inside his penalty area.

His performance has earned widespread praise and could give Da Cruz a selection headache once Petersen is available again.

“It was really exciting for me to play my first game because it has always been a dream for me to play for Kaizer Chiefs, one of the biggest teams in South Africa,” Leaner told the club’s official website.

Petersen had faced criticism

The competition for the position is particularly interesting because Petersen had come under scrutiny before his injury.

The Chiefs captain made several costly mistakes that directly contributed to goals, prompting sections of the club’s support to call for him to be dropped.

Da Cruz, however, remained firm in his backing of the Cape Town-born goalkeeper and made it clear that Petersen remained his first-choice option.

Leaner’s impressive introduction has now potentially changed the dynamics of the goalkeeping battle.

Rather than simply filling in while Petersen recovers, the former Sekhukhune goalkeeper has given the Chiefs coach something to consider with a composed display at a crucial stage of the season.

Leaner confident after debut

Leaner attributed his successful debut to his mindset and preparation, insisting he was ready when his opportunity arrived.

“I was able to make those saves because I went into the game with confidence and was very focused, which made me ready for action,” he said.

The goalkeeper also believes the experience can become the foundation for a successful career at Naturena.

“I see a bright future for myself where I can become a better goalkeeper in the future and achieve great things in my career,” he said.

Chiefs will return to action next Tuesday when they host Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 19:30.

The match could provide an early indication of Da Cruz’s thinking. If Petersen has recovered sufficiently to return, the coach must decide whether to restore his captain immediately or reward Leaner for his impressive first outing.
