Al Ahly began their Egypt Capital Cup campaign with a 5-0 win over Asyut Petroleum, while Zamalek were beaten 3-0 by ZED FC just days before the two Cairo clubs meet in the Egyptian Premier League.
The derby will be played at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, in the sixth round of the first phase of the 2026-2027 Egyptian Premier League season.
Al Ahly secured a convincing victory over Asyut Petroleum at Al Salam Stadium on Wednesday, taking the lead through Mohamed Magdy Afsha after two minutes.
Sofiane Ben Jedida doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute before Hussein El Shahat scored twice in quick succession, in the 58th and 60th minutes. Omar Sayed Moawad completed the scoring in the 79th minute.
The result gave Al Ahly their first three points and moved them to the top of Group C, while Asyut Petroleum remain without a point.
Al Ahly fielded a side made up largely of substitutes, alongside several first-team players. Their starting line-up was Hamza Alaa, Tawfik Mohamed, Yassin Marei, Achraf Dari, Ahmed Eid, Ali Mahmoud, Ahmed Reda, Afsha, Hussein El Shahat, Taher Mohamed Taha and Sofiane Ben Jedida.
Zamalek, meanwhile, endured a difficult evening against ZED FC at Arab Contractors Stadium.
The team was managed by Zamalek assistant coach Ibrahim Salah and included a number of young players. Seif Farouk Gaafar also featured after having been left out of training for an extended period.
Zamalek’s line-up consisted of goalkeeper Mahmoud El Shenawy, with Ezzat Mohamed, Ahmed Hossam, Khaled El Sayed, Mohamed Farag, El Sayed Osama, Ziad Medhat, Ahmed Safwat, Hossam Ashour El-Teky, Seif Gaafar and Adham Haseeb completing the side.
ZED FC took the lead through Marwan Hagag in the 40th minute. Ahmed Atef then struck twice in the space of a minute, scoring in the 54th and 55th minutes to complete a 3-0 win.
The victory earned ZED FC three points and placed them at the top of Group A. Zamalek are bottom of the group without a point.
