Lamine Yamal sets new 21st-century record beyond Messi and Ronaldo

Lamine Yamal has set a new benchmark for players under the age of 20, becoming the first in the 21st century to make a goal contribution in nine successive matches for club and country.

The Barcelona forward has either scored or provided an assist in each of those nine games, and on several occasions did both in the same match. His run ended against Croatia, but the achievement marks another significant step in the 19-year-old’s rapid rise.

The figures, highlighted by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, underline the scale of Yamal’s development this season. He has scored 12 goals and supplied seven assists for Barcelona and Spain.

The significance of the record lies not only in the total number of goals and assists, but in the consistency with which Yamal has influenced matches. According to the Besoccer database, no other player under the age of 20 has produced a goal contribution in nine consecutive games at the highest level of football during this century.

That record places Yamal ahead of several of the game’s most celebrated forwards at the same stage of their careers.

Lionel Messi’s longest comparable run before turning 20 ended at four consecutive matches. That sequence came during the 2007 Copa America, shortly before he reached the age of 20.

Cristiano Ronaldo also managed four successive matches with a goal contribution at the age of 19, during September 2004, while representing Manchester United and Portugal.

Among the next generation of elite forwards, Kylian Mbappe recorded six consecutive matches before his 20th birthday. Erling Haaland’s run reached eight games, the same mark achieved by Jadon Sancho and Florian Wirtz.

Yamal is therefore the only player in the comparison to reach nine matches, extending the record beyond the figures posted by Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe and Haaland at the same age.

His performances have already prompted widespread comparisons with the greatest players of the modern era. However, this latest milestone suggests that Yamal is no longer being judged solely as a promising young talent. His ability to turn control of games into goals and decisive passes has added a new dimension to his performances.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has described him as an exceptional talent with extraordinary determination. The latest statistics provide further evidence of the forward’s growing influence for both Barcelona and Spain.

Rather than representing a brief run of form, the nine-match sequence points to a level of sustained production that has not previously been seen from an under-20 player in the 21st century. It also signals a shift in the nature of the comparisons surrounding Yamal: instead of being measured only against players of his own age, he is increasingly being assessed alongside established legends of the sport.
