Pyramids FC maintain perfect start under Rulani Mokwena with League Cup win

Rulani Mokwena’s Pyramids FC began their League Cup campaign with a 3-2 victory over Canal SC, extending the South African manager’s winning start in charge to eight matches.

Pyramids needed less than a minute to take the lead. Ahmed Nadhir Benbouali opened the scoring almost immediately, giving Mokwena’s side the ideal start in their Group B fixture.

Canal SC held out until the 40th minute, when Abdel Rahman Magdi doubled Pyramids’ advantage. The Egyptian giants went into half-time with a two-goal lead and appeared to be in control of the contest.

The match became more competitive after the interval, however. Mohamed El Shebini reduced the deficit in the 57th minute, putting Canal SC back within reach of an equaliser.

Pyramids restored their two-goal cushion after 76 minutes when Ali Hamouda found the net. Canal SC continued to push and scored again seven minutes later, with Hazem Abou Sena making it 3-2 in the 83rd minute.

There was not enough time for Canal SC to complete the comeback, and Mokwena’s team held on for a hard-fought victory.

Pyramids FC are in Group B alongside Canal SC, Modern Sport, National Bank and Smouha. The competition is made up of four groups, with the top two teams in each section progressing to the quarter-finals.

The result means Mokwena has won all eight of his games since taking charge of the Egyptian giants. His record remains perfect, with Pyramids FC continuing their 100% start under the former South African coach.
