Al Ahly made a dominant start to their Egyptian League Cup campaign after cruising to a 5-0 victory over Petrojet Assiut on Wednesday evening.

The Cairo giants wasted no time in taking control of the Group Stage encounter, with Mohamed Magdy Afsha opening the scoring just two minutes into the game.

Afsha capitalised on a costly mistake by the Petrojet goalkeeper, intercepting the ball before calmly finishing into an empty net to give Al Ahly an early advantage.

The Egyptian giants continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their lead through Moroccan forward Sofiane Benjedida, who opened his scoring account for the club since joining the team.

The goal came after a swift counter-attack led by Hussein El Shahat. The experienced winger raced into the penalty area, beat his marker and picked out Benjedida, who finished into the bottom-left corner.

Al Ahly went into the break with a comfortable two-goal advantage before El Shahat took centre stage after the interval.

The winger struck twice in quick succession, scoring in the 58th and 60th minutes to put the result beyond doubt and complete a memorable individual contribution.

With Al Ahly firmly in control, Omar Sayed Moawad added a fifth goal in the 81st minute.

Moawad received a pass from Taher Mohamed before making no mistake with his finish to complete the emphatic victory.

The five-goal triumph gives Al Ahly three points from their opening Group Stage match and puts them at the top of the table, while Petrojet Assiut remain without a point after their heavy defeat.

Al Ahly will now look to build on the convincing result as they continue their League Cup campaign.
