Mamelodi Sundowns to lose influential duo for final

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielders Teboho Mokoena and Aubrey Modiba are racing against time to recover from injuries and be available for this week’s MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates.

The two Bafana Bafana internationals have returned to training with the Brazilians but are currently being managed through light sessions as the club carefully monitors their recovery.

Mokoena and Modiba picked up their respective injuries while on international duty with South Africa during the recent FIFA international break, raising concerns over their availability for one of the biggest fixtures on Sundowns’ domestic calendar.

With the MTN8 final fast approaching, the technical team is expected to assess both players’ fitness levels in the coming days before making a final decision on their involvement.

The pair have been important members of the Sundowns squad, and their potential return would provide the Pretoria-based club with a major boost as they prepare to face Pirates for the trophy.

However, Sundowns are unlikely to take unnecessary risks with either player, particularly if they are not considered fully fit to handle the intensity of a cup final.

The light training sessions represent a positive step in their recovery, but the next few days will be crucial in determining whether Mokoena and Modiba can make the matchday squad.

Sundowns will be hoping their two Bafana stars can complete their rehabilitation without any setbacks and give themselves a chance of featuring when the MTN8 title is decided against Orlando Pirates.
