Banyana Banyana and Madagascar to play behind closed doors

Banyana Banyana will begin their campaign for a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games without the support of fans after their first-leg qualifier against Madagascar was confirmed to be played behind closed doors.

The opening encounter is scheduled for Friday, October 9, 2026, at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, with kick-off set for 15:00.

Although Madagascar are officially the hosts of the first leg, the match will take place in Bloemfontein, with the decision to exclude spectators coming after a request from the visiting Malagasy delegation.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed the development in an official statement, informing supporters that they will not be allowed into the stadium for Friday’s fixture.

“SAFA would like to inform the public that no spectators will be allowed in the first match of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers between Madagascar and Sasol Banyana Banyana on Friday, 9 October 2026,” SAFA said.

The association explained that the decision followed a request from Madagascar, who are designated as the hosts of the first leg despite the match being staged at the Free State Stadium.

“The decision comes following a request made by the visiting team Madagascar, who are the hosts of the first leg Olympic Games qualifier. This match will take place at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein and kicks off at 15h00,” the statement added.

The unusual arrangement means Banyana Banyana will have to begin their Olympic qualification campaign in an empty stadium, with neither the South African supporters nor Madagascar’s travelling fans permitted to attend the first encounter.

For the South African side, the absence of spectators removes the home-like atmosphere that could have provided additional encouragement during a crucial qualifier.

However, Banyana Banyana will have the opportunity to play in front of supporters when the two teams meet again in the second leg.

The return fixture is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, at the same Free State Stadium, but this time with spectators permitted to attend. Kick-off for the second leg has been set for 18:00.

SAFA confirmed that fans will be allowed into the venue for the decisive second encounter, giving supporters the opportunity to rally behind Banyana Banyana as the Olympic qualification battle reaches its conclusion.

The two-legged tie will be important for both nations as they look to advance in the qualification process for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Banyana Banyana, who have established themselves as one of Africa’s leading women’s football teams, will be determined to secure a strong result in the opening match before returning to Bloemfontein for the second leg four days later.

With the first encounter being played behind closed doors and the second allowing fans back into the stadium, the South Africans will have to adapt to two very different match-day environments while keeping their focus firmly on progressing to the next stage of the Olympic qualifiers.
