Miguel Cardoso extends Mamelodi Sundowns contract

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has confirmed that he has signed a long-term contract with the South African champions, ending any uncertainty over his future at the club.

The Portuguese tactician revealed that the agreement was reached during the European summer, with both parties committing to a longer-term project at Sundowns.

Cardoso explained that the contract was not a recent development, stressing that discussions and the agreement had already been concluded during the off-season.

“Look, that situation already came in the off-season, nothing was done now, everything was done in the European summer,” Cardoso said.

The Sundowns coach also pointed to the shared footballing philosophy between himself and the club as a key factor behind the long-term commitment.

“It’s clear that both the club and myself share the same values in terms of how we see football,” he added.

Cardoso confirmed that the deal is designed to give him the opportunity to remain at Sundowns for the long term and continue developing the team according to the club’s ambitions.

“And yes, we have a long-term contract, that we as coaches want, to take it to the limit,” he said.

The confirmation comes just days before Sundowns face Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final, with Cardoso preparing for another major test in his tenure.

Sundowns will be aiming to lift the MTN8 trophy, while also denying Pirates the opportunity to secure a fifth title in the competition.

Cardoso’s long-term commitment provides the coach with greater stability as he continues to implement his ideas at one of South Africa’s leading clubs.

With his future now secured, the Portuguese coach can focus fully on the immediate challenge of the MTN8 final before turning his attention to the wider objectives of his long-term project with Sundowns.
