Abdullahi Umar marks Nigeria debut with decisive assist in Russia draw

Abdullahi Umar made an immediate impact on his Nigeria debut by setting up the equaliser in the Super Eagles’ dramatic 3-3 draw with Russia in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday evening.

The Hradec Kralove forward came on at half-time, injecting greater movement into Nigeria’s attack and creating problems for the Russian defence.

With Nigeria trailing 3-1, Umar played a key role in the closing stages. Following a swift counter-attack led by Emmanuel Fernandez, he delivered an accurate pass to Akor Adams, who finished in the 94th minute to secure a draw for the Super Eagles.

The assist gave Umar a direct and decisive contribution in his first appearance for the national team.

Umar relishes first Nigeria call-up

Umar also spoke about his selection for Nigeria during an interview with Footy-Africa, expressing his appreciation at receiving his first international call-up.

He later reflected on his performance and the emotions of making his debut, a match that ended with a significant contribution to the Super Eagles’ result.

The fixture also gave Nigeria manager Eric Chelle the opportunity to assess a number of new players, with several established members of the squad absent. Nine players made their international debuts during the match.

For Umar, the performance provides an encouraging start to his international career. His attacking involvement and assist could strengthen his claim for another Nigeria call-up in the team’s next engagements.
