Sphelele Mkhulise ‘happy’ at Mamelodi Sundowns despite limited playing time

Sphelele Mkhulise says he is content at Mamelodi Sundowns despite facing strong competition for a place after eight years in the club’s first-team squad.

The 30-year-old midfielder renewed his commitment to the Tshwane club earlier this year, calling the decision a “no-brainer” despite reported interest from other Betway Premiership rivals.

Mkhulise was speaking before Saturday’s MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates, who have dominated the competition over the past four seasons. He said Sundowns’ leadership and the way the club is managed had played a significant part in his decision to stay.

“I’m in my happy place and it feels like I’m at home here at Sundowns, so for me to sign the new contract was a no brainer. The leadership inspires us and they keep us motivated to give our best for the badge – that is what has kept me here for so long.”

His comments came after Sundowns manager Miguel Cardoso also explained his decision to sign a new contract with the club.

Mkhulise said he wanted to help Sundowns end Orlando Pirates’ hold on the MTN8, with the final expected to be played in front of a full stadium after tickets sold out in less than 24 hours.

He said both clubs had a responsibility to ensure the match lived up to the occasion.

The midfielder also remains ready to contribute if selected, with doubts over the availability of Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas.
