Emily Witbooi remains determined to fulfil European dream after failed Poland move
Cape Town City midfielder Emily Witbooi remains determined to realise his dream of playing in Europe despite seeing a potential move to Poland fall through.
The young midfielder attracted interest from Polish side Górnik Zabrze, but the proposed move did not materialise, forcing Witbooi to continue his development in South Africa.
Despite the setback, the Cape Town City player insists the failed transfer has not changed his ambitions. Witbooi remains focused on eventually earning an opportunity to compete in one of Europe’s biggest leagues.
“My dream is to play in the biggest leagues in Europe. I won’t say any [specific] club, but to play in the big leagues,” Witbooi told ESPN.
The midfielder’s ambitions extend beyond simply securing a move abroad. He wants to test himself at the highest level and believes continued development and consistent performances will be important in attracting opportunities from European clubs.
Interest from Górnik Zabrze demonstrated that Witbooi is already attracting attention outside South Africa, and the experience of being linked with a European move could serve as further motivation as he continues his career with Cape Town City.
For now, however, Witbooi is choosing to concentrate on his football rather than allowing transfer speculation or disappointment to distract him.
The midfielder says he has a strong support system around him to help deal with matters away from the pitch, allowing him to remain focused on improving as a player.
“I have good people around me [to help deal with off-field matters] – my family and my agency. I just focus on playing football.”
That approach could prove valuable as Witbooi continues to attract attention and works towards his long-term objective of playing in Europe.
While the opportunity to move to Poland did not materialise, the midfielder has made it clear that his European dream remains firmly alive. His immediate focus is on performing for Cape Town City and continuing to develop until another opportunity arrives.
With his ambitions unchanged and a support network helping him remain grounded, Witbooi will be hoping that the failed move to Górnik Zabrze is only a temporary setback rather than the end of his European journey.
