Belloumi stakes his claim as Algeria’s right-winger battle intensifies

Mohamed Bachir Belloumi has strengthened his case for a regular place in the Algeria side after scoring in consecutive matches, increasing the competition with Feyenoord winger Anis Hadj Moussa for a role on the right.

Belloumi scored in Algeria’s 2-2 draw with Burundi before finding the net again in Tuesday’s 2-1 win against Niger. His latest goal came from a direct free-kick, with a finish reminiscent of the technique associated with his father, Lakhdar Belloumi.

The 24-year-old, who plays for Hull City, came on during the first half against Niger after Ibrahim Maza was injured. His introduction helped revive an Algeria side that had struggled to create an impact, and he became one of the few clear positives from Brahim Hemdani’s first international gathering.

Belloumi’s latest performances are particularly significant given how far he had fallen from contention. Injuries had repeatedly interrupted his progress, while he was at times overlooked despite possessing clear ability. This international break has allowed him to re-establish himself within the squad’s rotation.

He was already influential in Algeria’s comeback against Burundi, alongside Adil Boulbina. Against Niger, Belloumi showed greater confidence in taking responsibility and attacking defenders, providing an element of directness that has occasionally been missing from the team.

His contribution was not flawless. He missed a clear chance during the final quarter of the match, underlining that he still needs to improve his consistency and finishing before he can claim an undisputed starting place.

However, with Algeria still searching for a recognised reference point at centre-forward, the ability of the wide players to contribute directly to the goalscoring burden is becoming increasingly important. Belloumi’s two appearances have moved him firmly into that conversation.

The winger from Mascara is not yet guaranteed a starting role, but he achieved something several other players failed to do during this gathering: he used his opportunities to alter his position in the pecking order.

Competition is likely to become stronger when Hadj Moussa returns. The Feyenoord winger was forced to leave the squad early after the opening match, but remains one of the leading candidates to succeed Riyad Mahrez.

The two players offer different qualities. Hadj Moussa is particularly effective in one-on-one situations and in tight spaces, where he can create openings for team-mates. Belloumi is more direct and tends to attack the space behind defences.

With a two-match meeting against Algeria’s main rivals, Togo, approaching, Hemdani now has two credible options for the right flank. It would be too early to say the question of life after Mahrez has been settled, but Belloumi has taken advantage of the opportunity presented to him.

The next response will have to come from Hadj Moussa.
