Zachary Athekame’s impressive Lyon start comes after Marseille interest

Zachary Athekame is making an immediate impact at Olympique Lyonnais after Marseille also considered signing him during the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old right-back joined Lyon on a season-long loan from AC Milan and has already scored two goals and provided two assists since arriving in the Rhone.

The player of Nigerian origin had been identified as a potential target by Olympique de Marseille before his move to Lyon. Gregory Lorenzi, Marseille’s sporting director, confirmed to L’Equipe that the club had examined Athekame’s profile during the summer.

Lorenzi also revealed that he had spoken to the defender, as had Marseille head coach Bruno Genesio. However, despite the club’s interest, Marseille were unable to complete the deal.

The club faced significant financial difficulties and restrictions connected to supervision by the DNCG. As a result, Marseille made no signings during the summer transfer window.

Athekame instead moved to Olympique Lyonnais, where he will remain for one season. His loan from AC Milan does not include an option to buy.

The decision is currently proving particularly beneficial for Lyon, with Athekame producing a series of encouraging performances during a difficult period for Marseille. He remains under contract with AC Milan until 30 June 2030 and has an estimated market value of 15 million euros.

Lens are due to play Olympique Lyonnais in the sixth round of the French championship shortly. The published odds list Lens as favourites at 2.40, with a draw priced at 3.80 and a Lyon victory at 2.65.
