Antonio Rudiger faces Real Madrid exit as club decide against 2027 contract renewal

Real Madrid have updated their stance on Antonio Rudiger’s future, with the experienced defender facing an exit from the Santiago Bernabeu when his contract expires next summer.

Real Madrid are reportedly not planning to offer Rudiger a new contract in 2027, meaning the Germany international is on course to leave the Spanish giants as a free agent.

The 33-year-old extended his stay with Los Blancos in June, signing a one-year deal that keeps him at the club until the end of the 2026/27 season.

Rudiger has made three appearances so far this campaign and scored once, but his role has changed following the arrival of Ibrahima Konate during the summer transfer window.

The former Chelsea defender is no longer an automatic starter under Jose Mourinho, with competition for places in the centre of defence increasing.

Konate arrival changes pecking order

Konate’s arrival has pushed Rudiger further down the defensive hierarchy, while Dean Huijsen is also reportedly ahead of him in Mourinho’s preferred order.

Eder Militao could further complicate Rudiger’s situation once the Brazil international returns to full fitness, adding another established option to Real Madrid’s central defensive ranks.

Rudiger’s reduced role comes after several seasons in which he established himself as an important figure at the Bernabeu.

He joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2022 and quickly became a key part of the side, contributing to their defensive strength and adding experience to a squad competing for major honours.

However, the club’s approach to contracts for veteran players appears set to influence the next stage of his career.

Real Madrid maintain contract policy

Rudiger has already announced his retirement from international football with Germany, meaning his focus is now entirely on his club career.

Real Madrid are understood to remain committed to their policy of not routinely extending the contracts of players aged 30 and above beyond one-year deals.

That stance means Rudiger’s current contract is expected to be his final agreement with the club.

Unless there is a change in Madrid’s position or the player’s circumstances, the centre-back will be free to negotiate with other clubs before his contract expires.
