Greece’s Georgios Donis says lessons from the 2026 World Cup helped Saudi Arabia win the Arabian Gulf Cup for the first time in 23 years.
Saudi Arabia defeated United Arab Emirates 2-0 in Tuesday’s final at Al-Inma Stadium in Jeddah to claim the 27th edition of the Gulf tournament, known as Gulf Cup 27.
Speaking at his post-match news conference, in comments reported by Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, Saudi Arabia manager Donis praised his players’ commitment throughout the competition.
“From the first day, the players showed desire and passion. There was unity and harmony within the team,” he said.
“We learned a great deal from the World Cup experience. Through instruction and hard work, we improved and developed step by step, and I believe the players deserve this result.”
Donis was appointed without having a complete understanding of the squad and said the team’s progress had become increasingly clear as they spent more time together.
“When I took charge, I did not know the players fully and we had not played many matches, but as time passed we improved considerably,” he added.
“Now we can see the level of understanding and development within the team. I expect us to continue producing the same level of performance in the future.”
The manager also outlined his approach ahead of the Asian Cup, which Saudi Arabia will host at the end of this year.
“I respect the media and ask you for patience and support,” Donis said. “We want to develop football and continue with this group of players. We have to be patient with players such as Homam and Firas, and we will give everything we have in the coming competitions.”
Saudi Arabia will review its performance in the Gulf Cup before deciding on the squad and plans for the next stage.
“We will enjoy this moment, then assess our work and study all the matches technically while looking for the best solutions,” Donis said.
“We will select the players who are most suitable for us and see what happens next month. Our next selections will be in December.”
The victory was Saudi Arabia’s first Arabian Gulf Cup title since 2003, ending a 23-year wait. United Arab Emirates, meanwhile, were unable to win the competition for the first time since 2013.
Donis also paid tribute to the supporters who backed the team throughout the tournament and said the triumph had given the players renewed belief.
“Throughout the competition, we saw tremendous desire, love and passion from the fans. They supported us at all times,” he said.
“I looked at them and felt they deserved this happiness. Today we made them happy. The players now feel confident and proud, and they can achieve more together.”
