Orlando Pirates defender Thapelo Xoki says the psychological challenge of recovering from a serious injury has been as demanding as the physical rehabilitation during his lengthy spell out of competitive football.
The 31-year-old has not played for the Sea Robbers since 24 May 2025, leaving him waiting more than 16 months for a return to action.
During that time, Xoki has watched Orlando Pirates strengthen their centre-back options while he worked towards regaining full fitness. He said the support of the club’s medical department had been crucial throughout the process.
“For me, I have always said I’m grateful first to the team, for the support they have given me over the past year, to the medical department,” Xoki told journalists.
“They have gone far beyond to try and assist me to get back, not only physically, but also psychologically, because to be out for a full year, it’s not an easy thing.”
Xoki said his focus was now on contributing to the squad in any way possible and helping Orlando Pirates achieve their ambitions.
“But yeah, I’m just excited to help the group in whatever capacity I can and looking forward to help the guys also make history,” he said.
“For us, it’s just about making history and making sure that we better the history of the club.”
Mental battle of rehabilitation
The defender also described the emotional strain of remaining away from football for such an extended period, while praising the physiotherapists and his team-mates for helping him remain connected to the squad.
“Being injured is not only physical. It’s a lot more mental than the body. That’s why I give credit to our physios,” Xoki said.
“They are not only treating the body, but also they were counselling me most of the time. And I also have to give credit to my teammates who have never made me feel like I’m an outsider.”
Xoki is now back in contention, with his immediate objective to build up playing time. However, competition for a place in the Orlando Pirates defence is strong.
Lebone Seema and Nkosinathi Sibisi have formed the preferred centre-back partnership at the start of the campaign and both earned Bafana Bafana call-ups. Sbangani Zulu has also received regular opportunities since joining from Richards Bay.
Mpho Chabatsane is competing for a larger role after having limited minutes so far, adding to the challenge facing former AmaZulu player Xoki as he attempts to reclaim his position.
Orlando Pirates will face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00.
