Moussa Niakhaté to miss Lyon’s clash with Lens with hamstring injury
Moussa Niakhaté will miss Lyon’s Ligue 1 meeting with Lens on Friday after suffering a hamstring injury while on international duty with Senegal.
The defender’s absence is a significant setback for Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca, with Niakhaté having established himself as an important part of the team’s defence since the beginning of the season.
The 30-year-old was forced to leave the Senegal squad early after featuring in the team’s first two matches under new coach Patrick Vieira. He played against Mozambique before appearing in the match against Ethiopia, with Vieira also handing him the captain’s armband.
Niakhaté returned to Lyon for treatment after sustaining the injury and will now be required to rest as he begins his recovery.
His absence leaves Fonseca with a defensive problem ahead of the trip to Lens and comes at a time when Lyon’s back line had started to develop greater stability.
Niakhaté had become a key figure in central defence and had developed a strong partnership with Felix Bacher. His absence means Fonseca will have to make changes to a defensive unit that had begun to settle.
The timing of the injury adds to the concern for Lyon, who are returning to domestic action after the international break.
The immediate focus will be Friday’s match at Bollaert, where Lyon will have to cope without one of their main defensive players.
However, Niakhaté’s injury could affect more than just the meeting with Lens. He is also a doubt for Lyon’s Europa League fixture against Crystal Palace on 15 October.
The extent of his absence will depend on how quickly he recovers from the hamstring problem. Lyon will hope the defender can return without the injury developing into a longer-term issue.
For Fonseca, the situation means having to find an alternative defensive solution at a demanding point in the season.
Niakhaté had played an important role in giving Lyon’s defence consistency, particularly alongside Bacher. His absence therefore leaves the manager with the task of reorganising his central defence ahead of the Lens match.
Lyon will now begin preparations for the trip without the Senegal international, while the club waits to see whether he can recover in time for the Europa League meeting with Crystal Palace.
