Rayan Cherki dismisses Michael Olise rumours after France debut

Rayan Cherki has rejected reports of tension with France team-mate Michael Olise after making an impressive international debut in a 4-1 win over Belgium.

France fell behind before recovering to claim a convincing victory, with Olise, Desire Doue and Cherki among the players who stood out. Cherki made a notable impact throughout the match, contributing during several stages of the comeback.

Before the game, Cherki had reacted angrily on social media to a report in L’Equipe suggesting there was friction between him and Olise. He responded sarcastically: “Just another fabrication… what wonderful inspiration.”

The performances of both players on the pitch quickly undermined the claim, and Cherki later directly rejected the story during an interview with TF1 after the match.

“Contrary to what some people might say, I will start by reducing my reactions,” Cherki said with a smile. “You should not listen to everything that is said in the press about players.”

Cherki also praised the unity within the France squad, saying the team’s understanding was stronger than it might appear from the outside.

“We have exceptional cohesion as a team,” he said. “I have rarely seen a group play with such harmony, from the first player to the last, and from the first member to the final member of the coaching staff.

“It is wonderful, and you can feel it on the pitch.”

The 22-year-old also explained that his responsibilities with France have developed. He said he was now expected to produce more than moments of individual brilliance, with consistency and complete performances becoming increasingly important.

“You have spoken about my dribbling and passing skills, but I am now in a position where I have to produce complete and clean performances,” Cherki said.

“Real football experts understand that, and anyone who thinks otherwise does not understand it.”

Cherki added that he had been learning to operate in a new position and believed his performances there would improve with time.

“I have learned to play in a new position, and I have to produce clean and consistent performances,” he said. “It is a position I prefer, and as time goes on you will see that it becomes easier.”

His first appearance for France therefore delivered more than a successful start to his international career. After responding to claims of a dispute with Olise, Cherki made clear that he believes performances on the pitch provide the strongest answer to criticism away from it.
