Zinedine Zidane described Michael Olise’s performance as “simply exceptional” after the Bayern Munich forward inspired France to victory over Belgium.
Olise came off the bench to create one goal and score twice, producing a decisive display that prompted a question about whether he could now be considered the best player in the world.
“Olise? I have nothing to say,” France manager Zidane replied. “What he is doing is simply exceptional.” He then smiled, underlining his admiration for the player’s contribution.
Zidane said France had improved significantly after the interval. The team had lacked attacking efficiency in the final third during the first half, but the substitutes changed the game and helped France bring the international break to a positive conclusion.
The manager said he was pleased with the response from the entire squad, rather than only those who came on during the match. France collected 10 points during the camp, although Zidane stressed that there were still areas to improve.
One of the main priorities, he said, was getting more players into the penalty area to make the team more effective in attack.
Zidane also praised Leny Yoro after the defender made an impressive first appearance for France. The coaching staff moved quickly to bring him into the squad following Ibrahima Konate’s injury, and Zidane said the young player had “performed his role to perfection”.
The manager also highlighted goalkeeper Guillaume Rest’s contribution after giving him the opportunity to play. Zidane said all three goalkeepers had performed excellently during the camp.
Rest’s involvement was intended to give him competitive experience with the national team, while also providing cover in case anything happened to Mike Maignan.
