Ibrahim Traoré vows football intervention despite FIFA suspension threat

Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traoré says his government will intervene directly in the country’s football affairs, despite the risk of sanctions from world governing body FIFA.

Traoré says the government has decided to take action because it believes changes are needed to improve the organisation and development of football in Burkina Faso.

“We have no choice; we have to step in, regardless of whether we get suspended or not,” Traoré said.

His comments signal a willingness by the Burkinabe authorities to become more directly involved in the running of football, an area traditionally expected to be managed independently by national football associations under FIFA regulations.

FIFA’s statutes generally require member associations to run their affairs independently and without undue influence from governments or other external bodies.

Government interference can therefore expose a national association to disciplinary measures, including suspension from international competitions.

Traoré, however, indicated that the potential consequences would not prevent his administration from pursuing its plans.

The president said the government’s intervention would focus on improving the organisation of football, developing infrastructure and providing greater support for players.

He also said the authorities wanted to create conditions that would allow footballers and other stakeholders to perform at their best.

“We are going to inject new energy so that people feel more at ease and can give their best,” he added.

Football is one of Burkina Faso’s most prominent sports and has enjoyed increased international attention in recent years, particularly following the national team’s performances at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Stallions reached the semi-finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Cameroon in 2022, before finishing fourth. Their run reinforced the country’s growing reputation on the continental stage.

Traoré’s intervention could now put Burkina Faso’s football authorities in a difficult position, particularly if FIFA determines that government involvement amounts to interference in the independence of the national association.

A suspension would have potentially significant consequences for Burkina Faso’s national teams and clubs, as FIFA sanctions can prevent affected teams from participating in international competitions and activities.

The president’s comments nevertheless suggest that his administration considers reforms to football administration and development a priority, even in the face of possible international repercussions.

The government’s stated objectives include improving football infrastructure, strengthening organisational structures and providing better conditions and support for players.
