Orlando Pirates will rely on a youthful, developing squad when they meet Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night (6pm).
The Buccaneers are attempting to secure an unprecedented fifth consecutive MTN8 title, but must do so with a team still adjusting after several important departures and injuries in recent months.
Their midfield has undergone an early overhaul, with Thapelo Mokobodi and Mthetheleli Mthiyani brought in from Stellenbosch to cover for the injured Thalente Mbatha and Sihle Nduli.
Pirates have also seen encouraging displays from forwards Mpho Padime and Simphiwe Masilela. However, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has become increasingly frustrated by their tendency to showboat, particularly when they have chances to put matches beyond doubt.
That wastefulness could prove costly against a Sundowns attack containing Brayan Leon, Cassius Mailula, Tashreeq Matthews and Antonio Van Wyk. Pirates may be punished if they abandon their tactical plan or fail to follow the basic principles demanded by their coach.
Captain Tapelo Xoki, though, has no doubts about the readiness of the younger players and recent arrivals. He says they have earned their opportunities and are prepared to help Pirates defend the MTN8, Betway Premiership and Carling Knockout trophies.
“First of all, they are not at this stage by chance. They have worked hard and they have earned their stripes. The club has entrusted them with the roles and responsibilities that they have. For us, it’s about always reminding them of that,” Xoki said.
“They have to play their game. Their game has taken them to this stage. They are now in a week where they will play their first final, some of them, but they aren’t exposed.”
The newcomers will not be left to deal with the occasion alone. The Fifa international break gave Pirates valuable time to prepare, while also allowing Mbatha and Makhehleni Makhaula to complete their recoveries and return to contention for the final.
Xoki believes the club’s experience extends beyond the players expected to start. Several squad members have already appeared in finals, while the technical staff can provide guidance during the occasion.
“There are guys who have played some of these finals,” Xoki added. “There are guys who will guide them on this day. There’s also a technical staff that is experienced enough to know what’s required and what to say to them. They aren’t exposed. They are ready.
“Everyone who wears an Orlando Pirates jersey is ready. It’s years of sacrifice and preparation that has taken them here. The moment is just for them to take it.”
