Napoli are monitoring Relebohile Mofokeng as they search for young attacking players, but face competition from Atletico de Madrid and Chelsea for the Union Saint-Gilloise winger.
According to CalcioNapoli24, the Italian club have been particularly impressed by the South African, who has made a strong start to life in Belgium since moving to the Brussels-based side last summer.
Born in 2004, Mofokeng is already regarded as one of the Belgian championship’s most promising young players. He joined Union Saint-Gilloise from Orlando Pirates in a deal understood to be worth 3.5 million euros.
His transition to European football has been swift. Mofokeng has played eight matches since the start of the season, scoring four goals and providing one assist.
Napoli are attracted by the qualities he could offer in the wide areas, including pace, direct running and creativity. The club also view the winger as a potential long-term investment rather than simply a short-term addition to their attacking options.
However, Napoli are not the only major club tracking his progress. Atletico de Madrid and Chelsea are also understood to be following the player closely, with the level of interest potentially increasing his value over the coming months.
Union Saint-Gilloise hold strong negotiating position
Union Saint-Gilloise are under no immediate pressure to sell. When Mofokeng arrived last summer, the club secured his services on a contract running until June 2030.
That lengthy agreement gives the Belgian club considerable control over the player’s future. His early performances, including those on the European stage, further strengthen Union Saint-Gilloise’s position should formal approaches arrive.
Napoli and their rivals are therefore likely to need to make a convincing offer if they are to secure Mofokeng’s signature. The developing transfer situation could become clearer in the next few weeks as the three interested clubs assess whether to pursue the winger more seriously.
Union Saint-Gilloise are due to play their eighth-round Belgian championship fixture against Leuven shortly.
