Former Sekhukhune United footballer Shaune Mogaila has pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and failing to render assistance after a fatal road crash in Tembisa.
Mogaila, 31, was convicted following the collision on 30 October 2024, in which his vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and struck another car.
The crash killed nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela. Her mother and 13-year-old brother were seriously injured and taken to hospital.
Mogaila was playing for Sekhukhune United, also known as Babina Noko, when the accident happened. He later returned to action for the club.
The National Prosecution Authority of South Africa (NPA) confirmed on Monday that Mogaila had admitted the charges and would be sentenced in November.
“The NPA has secured a conviction in the case of former professional footballer, Mokete Sean Mogaila, who pleaded guilty to charges of culpable homicide and failure to render assistance,” NPA communications officer Magaboke Mohlatlole said.
“The conviction follows a fatal collision in Tembisa on 30 October 2024, when Mogaila’s vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle.
“The clash claimed the life of nine-year old Gomolemo Mavimbela and left her mother and 13-year-old brother seriously injured.”
Initial reports alleged that alcohol and drugs had been found in Mogaila’s car. He was also alleged to have left the scene after the collision before later handing himself in to police.
The NPA said the conviction represented an important step towards justice for the victims.
“Mogaila’s bail has been extended until his next court appearance on 17 November 2026 when he is expected to be sentenced,” Mohlatlole added.
