Real Madrid’s women’s team is facing renewed scrutiny after a heavy 7-0 defeat by Barcelona at Camp Nou prompted debate over the future of the club’s project.
The scale of the loss has led to strong criticism, with concerns that such a result does not reflect Real Madrid’s status. Speaking on Radio Marca, journalist Roberto Gomez described Barcelona’s emphatic victory as a painful blow for the Spanish club.
Gomez said the defeat could prompt Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to consider one of two possible paths for the women’s team.
The first would be for Perez to lose enthusiasm for the project, potentially bringing an end to the team’s progress despite the development made by the club in recent years.
The alternative, according to Gomez, would be to maintain the current approach and try to strengthen the squad rather than make a fundamental decision about its future. However, he warned that the rivalry between the two clubs is beginning to have damaging consequences for the competition.
“Setting sporting spirit aside, and also putting aside Barcelona’s superiority – they may be the best team in the world and in history – there is a degree of revenge, a little competition and a great deal of hatred,” Gomez said.
“That is extremely bad for the competition.”
Barcelona’s seven-goal victory has once again highlighted the gap between the two sides in women’s football. The fact that the defeat came by such a margin at Camp Nou has placed Real Madrid’s project under further pressure and raised questions about whether the club can close the distance to their Catalan rivals.
