Senegal U20 beat DR Congo again with 3-0 friendly victory
Senegal’s Under-20 side completed a double victory over DR Congo with a 3-0 win in their second friendly, just days before the Young Lions begin the WAFU Zone A U20 tournament in Mali.
The Young Lions had already beaten the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in the first meeting at the Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium.
They produced an even stronger result in the return match, scoring twice in the closing stages to secure a comfortable victory.
Alassane Gueye opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 11th minute before Moussa Gueye and Adama Sagne added two more goals late in the second half.
The result gives Senegal two wins from the two-match friendly series and provides a positive conclusion to their preparations before the WAFU tournament starts on 15 October.
Senegal make early breakthrough
The Young Lions needed only 11 minutes to take control of the second meeting.
Alassane Gueye converted from the penalty spot to put Senegal ahead and give them an early advantage.
DR Congo were unable to respond before half-time, although the match saw further changes from Senegal coach Malick Daf.
In the 34th minute, Daf made four substitutions, taking off Norbert Gomis, Souleymane Ba, Pape Birame Ndong and Mamadou Lamine Diallo.
They were replaced by Ahmadou Bamba Faye, Amédine Bruno Fall, Adama Sagne and Mouhamed Junior Ba.
The changes gave other players an opportunity to contribute during the second match of the double-header.
Rain interrupts second half
The conditions became difficult after the interval, with rain delaying the start of the second half.
Despite the interruption, both teams continued to create opportunities as the match opened up.
Senegal had chances to increase their lead, while DR Congo also searched for a way back into the contest.
However, neither side was able to convert their opportunities during the early stages of the second half.
Senegal eventually found the breakthrough again with only seven minutes of normal time remaining.
Late goals seal another Senegal victory
Moussa Gueye doubled Senegal’s advantage in the 83rd minute.
The forward headed the ball into the net after receiving a pass from Ahmadou Bamba Faye, giving the Young Lions a two-goal cushion.
DR Congo were then faced with the task of scoring twice in the closing minutes to avoid another defeat.
Instead, Senegal struck again.
Sagne scores for second game running
Five minutes after Moussa Gueye’s header, Adama Sagne completed the scoring with a superb effort into the top corner.
Sagne had come off the bench and once again made an impact against DR Congo.
The goal was his second in two matches against the Leopards, following his earlier strike in Senegal’s 2-1 victory in the opening friendly.
His late contribution ensured Senegal finished the two-match series with a perfect record.
Young Lions complete successful preparation
The two victories have given Senegal an encouraging finish to their preparations ahead of the WAFU Zone A U20 tournament.
The Young Lions first recorded a 2-1 win over DR Congo before returning to claim a more convincing 3-0 result in the second encounter.
The latest victory was particularly emphatic because Senegal managed to remain in front after the early penalty and then added two goals in the final stages.
The matches have also allowed Daf to make changes to his squad, including four substitutions in the first half of the second meeting.
With the tournament in Mali beginning on 15 October, Senegal can now turn their attention towards the WAFU Zone A competition.
Two wins give Senegal momentum
The double-header against DR Congo has ended with Senegal scoring five goals across the two games while conceding only one.
Their second victory also included another goal from Sagne, who has now scored in both encounters.
The Young Lions will now prepare for the start of the WAFU Zone A U20 tournament, with their two victories over DR Congo providing a winning conclusion to their latest preparation period.
Senegal’s back-to-back successes mean they head into the competition with confidence after overcoming the Leopards twice in just a few days.
