Abdullah Al-Hamdan reveals he volunteered for Saudi Arabia’s first penalty against Qatar
Abdullah Al-Hamdan ignored the criticism and intense pressure surrounding him to take Saudi Arabia’s opening penalty in their Arabian Gulf Cup 27 semi-final victory over Qatar on Saturday.
The Al Nassr forward converted from the spot, helping settle his team and giving his team-mates the confidence to deliver when it mattered. Saudi Arabia went on to reach the final, where they will face the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday evening.
Al-Hamdan’s decision surprised Saudi Arabia great Mohammed Noor, who interviewed him after the match. The former player appeared taken aback when Al-Hamdan explained that he had personally asked to take the first penalty.
“I was the one who asked to take the first penalty,” Al-Hamdan said.
The forward has faced strong criticism and sustained pressure in recent weeks, but said he believed he was capable of taking responsibility in the shoot-out.
“Despite the pressure I had been under, I felt that I had the ability to take it, so I did, and then I gave my team-mates confidence,” he added.
Noor praised Al-Hamdan for his response and encouraged him to maintain that attitude as Saudi Arabia prepare for the final.
“I am proud of you. You must continue and give everything you have. You are a great player and you have a lot to offer,” Noor told him.
