Emmanuel Eboue highlights positives and concerns after Cote d’Ivoire defeat by Cameroon

Cote d’Ivoire were beaten 1-0 at home by Cameroon in a friendly on Saturday, 3 October 2026, with former international Emmanuel Eboue identifying both encouraging performances and areas of concern among the Ivorian players.

In an exclusive analysis for 225foot, Eboue reviewed the individual displays after a difficult evening for Cote d’Ivoire. The match offered an opportunity to assess several players, despite the hosts’ narrow defeat.

Gboho and Lafont earn praise

Yann Gboho was one of the players to impress Eboue. Although he had a difficult start to the match, the attacker stood out for his energy and willingness to contribute during Cote d’Ivoire’s attacking phases.

Eboue also praised goalkeeper Alban Lafont, who made several important saves to keep his side in the contest. Lafont’s interventions helped Cote d’Ivoire remain within reach of Cameroon as the match progressed.

Fofana and Zabi fail to make enough impact

Rayan Fofana, however, was judged to have made too little influence on the game. The forward was particularly quiet during the first half and struggled to affect Cameroon’s defensive organisation.

Patrick Zabi was another player who left Eboue disappointed. Operating in midfield, Zabi was unable to exert sufficient influence in the challenges or contribute enough to the team’s overall play.

Eboue’s assessment therefore presented a mixed view of Cote d’Ivoire’s performance. While Gboho’s attacking effort and Lafont’s goalkeeping provided positives, the limited contributions from Fofana and Zabi were among the shortcomings exposed by the 1-0 loss.

The result leaves the focus on the individual performances as Cote d’Ivoire reflect on a home defeat in which Cameroon’s defence was able to withstand the hosts’ attacking threat.
