Yan Diomande says he remains focused on improving at Real Madrid despite admitting he has had limited playing time since joining the Spanish club.
The 19-year-old winger has quickly become one of Cote d’Ivoire’s most closely watched players, and his introduction against Cameroon on Saturday immediately lifted the atmosphere at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium.
Diomande came on after an hour in the 1-0 defeat and nearly equalised, with his effort saved by Cameroon goalkeeper Simon Ngapandouetnbu.
Speaking to NCI after the match, the forward gave an open assessment of the defeat before discussing his contrasting roles for club and country.
Diomande has already earned significant trust from Cote d’Ivoire manager Herve Renard. At Real Madrid, however, competition for places has meant he is being introduced more gradually.
The player said he was comfortable with that situation and had no complaints about his use in Spain.
“There is nothing that changes. I train a lot, even though I don’t play much there, and the training sessions are intense,” he said.
“It is pleasing that the coach trusts me and gives me a lot of playing time.”
Diomande said the demanding daily work at Real Madrid ensured he was ready whenever he joined the Elephants. Rather than presenting his limited minutes as a problem, he described it as part of the challenge of establishing himself at the club.
His transfer to Real Madrid, combined with his growing importance for Cote d’Ivoire, has also changed the expectations surrounding him. But when asked by NCI about being viewed as a “superstar”, the former Leipzig player quickly rejected the label.
“It is always good. We should forget this superstar business; I am still the same,” he said.
“For you, perhaps I am one, but I remain the same. Above all, it is a pleasure to play for my country. I feel better than anywhere else whenever I represent the flag.”
Diomande was equally relaxed when discussing the pressure now attached to each of his appearances.
“I love it when there is pressure because it allows me to surpass myself. I also play for a club where there are very high demands,” he said.
His comments underline the different stages of his development at club and international level. Diomande is still working to secure a regular place at Real Madrid, while he has already become one of the players most anticipated by Cote d’Ivoire supporters.
So far, he appears to be handling both roles with the same composure: developing patiently in Spain while carrying growing expectations with his national team.
