Iliman Ndiaye leaves door open for Marseille return despite Manchester City move
Manchester City forward Iliman Ndiaye has hinted that his story with Olympique de Marseille may not be over, despite only recently completing a major move to the Premier League champions.
The Senegal international, 26, spoke about his strong connection with Marseille in an interview with La Provence, describing the Ligue 1 club as “his club” and admitting that he still has unfinished business with the French side.
Ndiaye was born and raised in Marseille and came through the club’s academy during his formative years. However, he was unable to make his first-team debut before leaving France and moving to England, where he eventually established himself at Sheffield United.
His breakthrough came in the English Championship, where his performances earned him a return to France in 2023, with Marseille paying around €17 million to secure his services.
The move generated considerable excitement among Marseille supporters, but Ndiaye struggled to produce his best form during his time at the Vélodrome.
His first season proved difficult both individually and collectively, with Marseille enduring a challenging campaign. Several players who arrived at the club during that period also struggled to meet expectations before moving elsewhere and finding greater success.
Ndiaye eventually left Marseille for Everton, where he rebuilt his reputation with a series of impressive performances.
His progress in England ultimately earned him a high-profile move to Manchester City this summer, with the Premier League club reportedly paying €70 million for his services.
Despite taking the next major step in his career, however, Ndiaye has not closed the door on a potential return to Marseille in the future.
The Senegal star acknowledged the affection he continues to receive from Marseille supporters, including calls for him to return to the club.
“The shouts from Marseille supporters asking me to come back? It is nice to hear. I don’t think that the story is finished, but we will see. I’m just saying, I never know where it’ll lead me, but we’ll see anyway,” Ndiaye told La Provence.
His comments are likely to keep speculation alive among Marseille supporters who still hold the forward in high regard.
For now, Ndiaye’s immediate focus will be on establishing himself at Manchester City and making the most of his latest career opportunity.
However, his strong emotional connection with Marseille means a future return to the Vélodrome cannot be completely ruled out, with the Senegal international himself acknowledging that he does not know where his career will eventually take him.
