Herve Renard opens up on Ivory Coast defeat to Cameroon

Ivory Coast head coach Hervé Renard has defended his decision to make several changes to his starting line-up after the Elephants suffered a 1–0 defeat to Cameroon in an international friendly on Saturday, October 3, at the Ebimpé Olympic Stadium in Abidjan.

Renard opted to reshuffle his team for the encounter, using the friendly as an opportunity to give playing time to several players who have not featured regularly for the national team.

However, the changes failed to produce the desired result as Ivory Coast were beaten on home soil by their West African neighbours.

The defeat came despite the Elephants entering the friendly in strong form after winning both of their opening matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Renard, though, refused to distance himself from the selection decisions that preceded the loss.

After the match, the French tactician admitted that he deliberately took risks with his starting lineup in an attempt to assess his options ahead of future assignments.

“I took risks with the starting eleven because it was the only opportunity to try out the new players; I take responsibility for the risks I took, that’s part of my job,” Renard said.

Several key players were left on the bench, including goalkeeper Yahia Fofana, Franck Kessié, Yan Diomandé, Evan Ndicka, Elye Wahi and Malick Yalcouyé.

Their absence from the starting line-up meant Renard had the chance to assess alternative combinations and give other members of his squad valuable international experience.

However, the experimental line-up struggled to deliver the attacking threat and overall effectiveness Ivory Coast have shown in recent competitive matches.

Cameroon took advantage of the situation and held on to their narrow victory, handing the Elephants a rare setback in front of their home supporters.

Despite the result, Renard is likely to view the fixture as part of his preparations for the more important challenges ahead. The friendly provided an opportunity to assess the depth of his squad and identify players capable of stepping into the team when required.

With Ivory Coast maintaining a strong position after their perfect start to the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, Renard will now look to ensure the lessons from the Cameroon defeat are applied when the Elephants return to competitive action.
