Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will contest the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, October 10 (6pm), with the season’s first piece of silverware at stake.
The match in Durban is sold out, underlining the anticipation surrounding a meeting between the two leading teams in the Betway Premiership. Demand was so high that the ticketing website went down shortly after tickets were released on Friday.
The clubs have finished in the top two of the league in each of the past four seasons and are once again setting the pace, making their presence in the final a reflection of their consistency rather than a surprise.
Pirates, the defending champions, are seeking a record-extending fourth consecutive MTN8 title. They have also reached a second successive final and a fifth in a row for the club under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Ouaddou has established Pirates as a team capable of delivering in cup competitions while also collecting points in the league. They are just one point behind Sundowns, with a game in hand, and have secured a place in the final round of the CAF Champions League group-stage qualifiers, where they will face African Stars of Namibia over two legs.
The Sea Robbers have not been entirely convincing, however. Departures during pre-season and early-season injuries have weakened their squad, forcing Ouaddou to rely on youngsters and new arrivals.
The coach has criticised his players’ lack of a clinical edge, with Yanela Mbuthuma and Boitumelo Radiopane producing inconsistent performances. He has also questioned the immaturity of some younger players, particularly their tendency to focus on showboating.
Ouaddou has himself faced criticism after repeatedly warning that he would leave if the team failed to adopt a more constructive style of play. Despite those concerns, Pirates have continued to produce results when required.
They have scored at important moments, while goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has maintained his reputation as “Mr Clean Sheets” by making the side difficult to break down.
Sundowns will provide a formidable test. They lead the Betway Premiership, remain unbeaten and are the newly crowned FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup champions. They are also on course to face Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
Coach Miguel Cardoso has been frustrated by Sundowns’ failure to keep clean sheets, although their attacking threat remains a major strength. Their midfield could be tested if Teboho Mokoena and his deputy Bathusi Aubaas are unavailable after suffering injuries while on duty with Bafana Bafana during the ongoing FIFA window.
Cardoso does, though, have considerable depth at his disposal. Sphelele Mkhulise is expected to come into contention if either player is ruled out, highlighting Sundowns’ ability to invest heavily in leading players.
The final will ultimately test more than form and squad depth. Both teams will be seeking to impose themselves fully on the contest, with their progress this season and in recent years ensuring the match carries significant expectations.
