Orlando Pirates responded to last weekend’s loss to rivals Kaizer Chiefs by launching their DStv Diski Challenge campaign with a 4-1 win over Stellenbosch FC on Saturday morning.
The Buccaneers dominated the scoring, with Aphelele Nzimande and Khumoetsile Van Schalkwyk both finding the net twice to secure a convincing victory.
Pirates had been seeking a positive response after beginning their campaign with defeat against Kaizer Chiefs. Their emphatic result against Stellenbosch FC provided it, as the two-goal contributions from Nzimande and Van Schalkwyk underlined the difference between the teams.
AmaZulu FC claim KwaZulu-Natal derby honours
AmaZulu FC earned local bragging rights later on Saturday by beating Richards Bay FC 2-0 in the KwaZulu-Natal derby.
The victory gave Usuthu their second successive win of the season and maintained their perfect start to the campaign.
Richards Bay FC, known as the Natal Rich Boyz, could not follow up their opening-weekend victory. The defeat was their first of the season.
TS Galaxy maintain winning run
TS Galaxy also retained their winning start to the DStv Diski Challenge with a narrow 1-0 victory away against Durban City on Saturday morning.
The result kept TS Galaxy unbeaten after the opening round of matches, while Durban City’s difficult beginning continued.
City have now lost both of their matches at the start of the campaign, leaving them without a point from their first two games.
Siwelele FC secure first victory
Siwelele FC recorded their first win of the DStv Diski Challenge season by defeating Chippa United 2-0.
Neither side managed to score before half-time, but Siwelele FC broke the deadlock just one minute after the restart. Siyabonga Msimango put the visitors ahead in the 46th minute.
Chippa United remained within reach until the closing stages, when Onthatile Lemao settled the contest by scoring Siwelele FC’s second goal in the 79th minute.
The result marked a first victory for Siwelele FC, while Chippa United were unable to respond after the match remained goalless during the opening 45 minutes.
