Roma suffer Bryan Cristante injury blow before Real Madrid clash

Roma midfielder and captain Bryan Cristante will miss the club’s next match at Como because of a knee injury, with his involvement against Real Madrid in the Champions League now in serious doubt.

Cristante is suffering from inflammation in his right knee, according to French website Foot Mercato, citing La Gazzetta dello Sport. The 30-year-old had previously reported lower-back pain during the most recent international break.

Roma are due to face Real Madrid only a few days after their away fixture against Como, leaving manager Gian Piero Gasperini waiting for further updates on Cristante’s condition. Unless the midfielder makes a sudden recovery, his chances of being available for the European tie appear limited.

The injury represents a significant setback for Gasperini. Cristante has established himself as an important part of Roma’s midfield since the start of the season, contributing in several areas of the team’s play.

He has been relied upon for his defensive work, his ability to help build attacks and his involvement at set pieces. His absence would therefore remove a player who has become one of Gasperini’s most dependable options.

Marten de Roon is the leading candidate to replace Cristante against Como and could be handed his first start for Roma. The Dutchman is expected to operate alongside Manu Kone in midfield if Gasperini chooses that approach.

Gasperini is also considering Niccolo Pisilli as an alternative. The Roma manager is expected to make his final decision according to the team’s requirements across the next two matches.

Cristante’s fitness will remain a particular concern as Roma prepare for the demanding meeting with Real Madrid. Gasperini will want as many of his established players available as possible for a match against the Spanish side’s attacking and technical quality.

Roma are now monitoring Cristante’s recovery in the hope that he can return before the Champions League encounter. However, if he is unable to recover in time, his absence would deprive the team of a midfielder whose presence and influence have been central to Gasperini’s plans since the beginning of the season.
