Ferran Torres leaves Spain camp with ankle injury as Carlos Espi receives first senior call-up

Ferran Torres has withdrawn from Spain’s squad after suffering an injury to his left ankle, with Carlos Espi called up as his replacement.

The Spanish Football Federation confirmed in an official statement that Torres had been experiencing pain in the ankle. Spain manager Luis de la Fuente subsequently left out the Paris Saint-Germain striker and selected Espi, who plays for Spain Under-21s.

The call-up is Espi’s first involvement with the senior national team. He joins the squad ahead of Spain’s Nations League matches against Czechia and Croatia.

Torres’ departure is the third injury-related absence from Spain’s camp during the current international break. Barcelona defender Eric Garcia and Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams have also left the squad because of injuries.

Spain lead Group C in the Nations League, which also contains England, Czechia and Croatia.

De la Fuente’s side are preparing to face Czechia on Saturday in the third round of the group stage.
