Zlatko Dalic says the United Arab Emirates must contain Oman’s attacking threat from the left when the sides meet in the Gulf Cup 27 semi-final on Saturday.
The UAE face Oman in the second semi-final, after Saudi Arabia play Qatar, with a place in the final at stake.
Dalic said his team had closely analysed Oman’s performances in the tournament, paying particular attention to the final 20 minutes of their match against Kuwait.
“We studied the Oman team in their Gulf Cup matches, especially the last 20 minutes against Kuwait, and analysed all of their strengths,” he said.
“We respect Oman, and matches between Oman and the UAE are always difficult.”
The UAE coach was pleased with the way his side had performed in their three matches so far, but said their immediate focus was on securing victory on Saturday rather than looking ahead to winning the competition.
“I am very happy with the way we have played in the last three matches. The players have produced a great performance,” Dalic said.
“Now our focus is on tomorrow’s match before thinking about winning the tournament. We must build on our strengths and play more quickly, while there are also aspects we need to improve.
“Oman are a strong team, but I am optimistic and we have the ability to win.”
Oman have had an extra day to recover before the semi-final, but Dalic rejected the idea that the difference in rest would provide the UAE with an excuse.
“Oman had an extra day to rest, but we rested some players in our previous match,” he said. “We have no excuses. We will work with the highest level of commitment and energy for our fans.
“We are ready, and I do not want to make excuses about the rest periods.”
Dalic also highlighted the need for his players to remain organised and prevent Oman from creating opportunities in the UAE penalty area.
“We have to work precisely and be fully present,” he said. “Oman rely on attacking from the left side, and we have to play cohesively and stop them from reaching our goal.”
The UAE coach said his side would concentrate on their own performance rather than become distracted by their opponents.
“It will be a strong match. We are focusing only on our team and are not concerned with the opponent,” he said. “Our objective is to secure a place in the final.”
The UAE reached the semi-finals by finishing top of Group A on goal difference ahead of Qatar.
Oman secured their place after drawing level with Iraq in every respect at the end of the group stage, with a draw deciding which team progressed.
