Portugal defender Renato Veiga says he has been told by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) not to discuss Cristiano Ronaldo after the captain left the squad following another spell on the bench.
The issue overshadowed Portugal’s 4-2 Nations League victory over Denmark in Copenhagen, despite the team celebrating an impressive result. Ronaldo’s departure from the camp has continued to attract attention after manager Jorge Jesus again decided not to start him.
Asked about the situation after the match, Veiga referred reporters to officials from the FPF before explaining that he had been given clear instructions to remain silent.
“I have a close relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, and he knows how much I appreciate and care for him, but I was instructed not to speak about this matter,” said Veiga.
When journalists continued to ask questions, the defender apologised but maintained that he could not comment.
“I cannot talk about it, I am sorry. I really cannot speak,” he added.
Veiga remains an important part of Jesus’ plans and has played every minute of Portugal’s first three matches since the new manager took charge.
The defender, who was born in 2003, also described representing his country as a major honour and said he was determined to keep improving.
“I work every day to give my best for my club and the national team. Playing in the Portugal shirt is the greatest honour any player can have, and I will continue working to improve my level,” he said.
Veiga believes Portugal’s tactical progress has been helped by the squad having more time to train and work together. That greater continuity, he said, had allowed the players to carry out the coaching staff’s instructions more effectively.
Portugal will face Norway at Estadio do Dragao on Sunday as they look to extend their winning run and strengthen their position at the top of the group.
However, defensive organisation remains an area requiring further work. Portugal conceded twice against Denmark in Copenhagen, and Jesus will hope his players can avoid distractions away from the pitch during the next stage of the campaign.
A BOLA posted video footage on 2 October 2026 saying Veiga had appeared ready to discuss the controversy surrounding the captain in the mixed zone, but had been prevented from doing so by the FPF.
