Relebohile Mofokeng targets unbeaten run and rising transfer value with Bafana Bafana

Relebohile Mofokeng can round off an outstanding run of form by helping Bafana Bafana avoid defeat against Egypt on Sunday, a result that would extend his unbeaten sequence for club and country to 10 matches.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable period since June. He represented South Africa at the World Cup, collected the Footballer of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards in the PSL, and completed a move to Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Mofokeng has since added a Belgian Super Cup winners’ medal, featured in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers and begun playing in the Europa League group stages. Royale Union Saint-Gilloise’s campaign includes meetings with Juventus, AC Milan and Marseille.

His domestic season has also started strongly. Royale Union Saint-Gilloise are top of the Belgian league standings after six wins and one draw.

Mofokeng’s form reached another level in September, when he scored five goals and supplied one assist in six appearances for club and country.

For Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, he scored against Lommel SK, Sint-Truidense VV and FC Viktoria Plzen, while also providing an assist against Sint-Truidense VV. His contribution for Bafana Bafana came in the form of two goals against Eritrea on Wednesday.

Those results have helped him go nine matches without defeat, with eight wins and one draw. Seven of those games have come for his club and two for the national team.

A draw or victory against the Pharaohs at the weekend would take that sequence into double figures and give Mofokeng a 10th consecutive match without defeat.

His performances are also expected to have a significant effect on his transfer valuation by the end of the year. Those involved in player assessments estimate that his value could double as the calendar moves into 2027.

Mofokeng’s current estimated worth is €3 million, approximately R56.2 million according to Transfermarkt. On the basis of his displays this season, that figure is expected to move towards double its current level.

Playing regular international football in the Belgian top flight is viewed as an important factor in his valuation. However, his Europa League involvement could prove even more influential.

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise are scheduled to face Real Sociedad, Hapoel Be’er Sheva, Celta Vigo, Lech Poznan and Lyon before the end of the year in the second-tier European competition.

Mofokeng will have another opportunity to strengthen his case with Bafana Bafana in November, when South Africa face Kenya.
