Veszprem beat Barcelona to win Handball Club World Cup as Ahmed Adel says ‘we got what was ours’

Hungarian side Veszprem won the Handball Club World Cup after defeating Barcelona 42-33 in the final, with Egypt international Ahmed Adel “Dola” celebrating a victory he said had made up for last year’s disappointment.

“I am extremely happy to win the title,” Adel told On Sport. “We were fortunate in the final, unlike last year, and managed to beat the same team. We got what was ours.”

Yahia El-Deraa played for Veszprem and helped lead the team to the trophy, while his brother Seif El-Deraa was part of the Barcelona side.

Veszprem’s squad also included three other Egyptian players: Ahmed Hesham “Dodo”, Ali Zein and Ahmed Adel “Dola”. The club is coached by Spain’s Javier Pascual, who also manages the Egypt national team.

The result gave Veszprem the title for a second time. Their first triumph came in 2024, when Yahia El-Deraa was also in the squad and was the only Egyptian player at the club.

Barcelona won the competition in 2025 under the leadership of Seif El-Deraa. Although he was not the team captain at the time, his team-mates asked him to lift the trophy because the tournament was being held in Egypt.

This time, Yahia El-Deraa lifted the trophy as Veszprem captain.

Veszprem goalkeeper Emil Nielsen was named player of the match. The Denmark international previously played for Barcelona before moving to Veszprem.

Veszprem forward Hugo Descat was the leading scorer in the final, finishing with 10 goals.

The result completed the tournament’s final standings. Veszprem took the gold medal, Barcelona finished with silver, Al Ahly won bronze and Zamalek placed fourth.
