Nico Williams has left the Spain camp after reporting discomfort in his left thigh and will return to Athletic Bilbao without a replacement being called up.
The winger scored Spain’s fourth goal in their 4-1 Nations League win over Croatia on Tuesday, finding the net in the 89th minute in the Group A match in Seville.
The Spanish Football Federation confirmed that Williams would not be replaced for the two remaining fixtures of the international break. Spain are due to face Czechia in Oviedo on Saturday before meeting Croatia again in Split next Tuesday.
As a result, Spain will complete the current camp with one fewer player in their squad.
A statement from the media office of La Roja said: “Nico Williams is leaving the Spain camp. The international reported discomfort in his left thigh after the match played against Croatia in Seville.
“His condition was closely monitored during the day off and, as the discomfort continued, he did not take part in Thursday’s training session.”
The federation said Williams underwent medical examinations on Thursday before a decision was made about his departure.
“Following the medical tests carried out today by the Spanish Football Federation’s medical services, it was decided that he should leave the current camp to continue his recovery,” the statement added.
“Athletic Bilbao’s medical services have been kept informed at all times about the player’s condition. He will continue his treatment and recovery under the supervision of his club.”
Williams’ goal against Croatia came after Spain had already secured a second successive victory in their Nations League group. They began the campaign with a 3-2 win over England before defeating Croatia 4-1, leaving them top of the section with six points.
Spain are European Championship and World Cup holders, and their remaining matches during this international window will be played without the Athletic Bilbao forward.
